Dr. Jan Ehrhardt

Jan Ehrhardt has many years of experience in stage, theatre, publishing and copyright law.
He originally focussed on public law (constitutional law, regulatory law, economic and health administration law), in which he received his doctorate.

His expertise in intellectual property includes fundamental proceedings on the constitutionality of artists’ social insurance before the Federal Constitutional Court.

From 1989 to 2020, he was managing legal counsel of the Association of German Stage and Media Publishers and managing director of the later founded auditing company for the auditing of royalty statements of theatres. Since 1990, he has also been legal advisor to the stage publishers on the board of directors of the Verwertungsgesellschaft Wort and its commissions. He is responsible for the reorganisation of business relations between stage publishers and theatres at the association level (Deutscher Bühnenverein Bundesverband der Deutschen Theater und Orchester) and for the copyright agreements with public broadcasting (ARD/ZDF), which resulted in the first Joint Compensation Scheme with ARD on fictional scripts in 2020. Jan Ehrhardt was a member of one of the working groups set up by the Federal Ministry of Justice to reform copyright law (“Second Basket”) as well as a member of the Round Table on Strengthening Artists’ Social Security at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
